17 Ways You Can Glorify God: A Summary of Thomas Watson’s Thoughts

Here are 17 ways that you can glorify God in your life. I put this together following Thomas Watson’s thoughts in his chapter on “Man’s Chief End” in his must read, A Body of Divinity

  1. Aim purely at God’s glory: This is what Jesus did (John 8:50). Make God’s glory your goal instead of gaining credit, estate, or relations. Be content that God’s will take place instead of yours (Matt. 26:39). Be ok with others outshining you in giftedness: their gifts are a means of bringing Him glory!
  2. By confession of sin (Josh 7:19). When we confess our sin we agree that God’s laws and ways are just and perfect. We admit to our own unworthiness. We allow Him to show His graciousness. Don’t wait until you are caught. Don’t shift the blame.
  3. By believing His promises (Rom. 4:20). When we trust God we show that He is trustworthy, that He is powerful enough to fulfill His Word, and that He will never fail. To doubt is to call Him a liar.
  4. Have God’s glory as the apple of your eye. When God’s glory suffers, we suffer too.
  5. Bear much fruit (Matt. 5:16; John 15:8; Phil. 1:11; 1 Pet. 2:12).
  6. Be content in the situation that God has you. If you complain that you should have more, you call God unwise and ungracious. He has put you in your situation with a good purpose in mind. Whatever your circumstances, God is blessing you in so many ways. If you are going through a trial in order to bring God more glory, rejoice!
  7. Grow in your faith. God has intertwined His glory and our works. The more we pray, read the Bible, share the gospel, give to the poor, love others, the more glory God gets. It makes sense.
  8. Live unto God (2 Cor. 5:15; Rom. 14:8; Phil. 1:20). Make every decision with Him in mind. Live for His service and wholly for Him.
  9. Walk through life cheerfully. When non-Christians see that you react differently to hardship and hatred, it makes them wonder where you find hope. Our joy through struggles shows the world that there is hope beyond this life.
  10. Stand up for His truths (Jude 3). Take a stand for the gospel. Speak up when the Bible is derailed. Don’t fall away with our culture. Don’t be tricked by ideas like, “There is no absolute truth”.
  11. Praise Him! (Psalm 50:23). God is worthy of all thankfulness, singing, worship, adoration, praise. Sing to Him in your hearts. Offer up thanks for every single blessing.
  12. Be zealous for His name (John 2:14-17). There ought to be a fire burning in us when God is insulted or mocked. Turn over tables like Jesus did if necessary!
  13. Acknowledge God in the average, normal parts of life (1 Cor. 10:31). Pray before each meal, consider His attitudes when voting, volunteer time for community service, be honest when your cashier makes a mistake and charges you less than you owe, don’t make gestures at bad drivers.
  14. Draw others to Christ! The gospel is the apex of the glory of God. Preach salvation through the death and resurrection of Christ and pleading for sinners to come home. When one becomes a Christian they become a worshipper of God.
  15. Suffer for God and the gospel (John 21:19; Rev. 12:11). When we suffer for God’s sake He is glorified because we show our enemies the worth of the gospel, that Jesus is our King, and that God’s Word and gospel is true.
  16. Give God the glory for all of your accomplishments (Acts 12:23; 1 Cor. 15:10). Point up when people compliment you. Let them know that you achieved it all by His strength and grace.
  17. Live a holy life (1 Pet. 2:9-10; Rom. 2:24). How we behave reflects on God. How people see Christians act will determine how they feel about Jesus.

Below are verses of the Bible that emphasize our responsibility and call as Christians to glorify God in all areas of life:

  • Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
  •  John 3:30He must increase, but I must decrease.”
  •  John 15:8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.”
  •  1 Corinthians 6:20 “For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”
  •  1 Corinthians 10:31 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
  •  Philippians 1:11 “…having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”
  •  2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 “To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  •  1 Peter 2:12 “Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
  • 1 Peter 4:10-11 “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.”
